What is it?

What is Biblical Counseling?

We define Biblical Counseling as “Biblical counseling is targeted discipleship in a problem area of a person’s life for a season.”

The philosophy of ministry for us at Grace Matters is found in

1 Thessalonians 5:14: “And we urge you, brothers and sisters, admonish the rebellious, comfort the discouraged, strengthen the weak, be patient toward all.”

The following Scriptures and beliefs drive our approach and faith practices in Biblical Counseling at Grace Matters:

  • We present Christ without shame, lovingly confronting sin, and teaching Biblical principles in order to produce maturity in the life of the counselee, always seeking to provide comfort for the wounded as well. Colossians 1:28
  • We hold to the reality that Scripture, according to 2 Peter 1:3, is fully sufficient in all matters of the human experience, all matters of life and faith.
  • We define Biblical Counseling as the Christ-centered, Bible-based, Holy Spirit-empowered, practical and therapeutic [restorative] application of properly interpreted Biblical truths to a person’s life through nurture, instruction, correction, and prayer, with the goal of personal maturity and fruitfulness as an authentic Christian.

Our Philosophy of Counseling:

We are not just counselors who are Christians—we are Biblical Counselors. The methods and strategies of this counseling ministry are all based on the Bible, its categories, and how the truths in God’s Word apply to the problems of mankind. The purpose of this ministry is to bring healing to the Christian as well as the non-Christian community by means of properly interpreted and applied Biblical truth. The goal is life transformation, not simply behavioral modification.

For those burdened by “besetting sins” like addictions, we have helped many, many believers receive freedom.

For those who have experienced relational trauma, we have extensive experience helping survivors of abuse, those impacted by sexual and relational brokenness, and those who have experienced traumatic loss.

There is a profound difference in content and results between Counseling based in God’s Word and secular therapy approaches. We offer authentic and effective Biblical Counseling that provides permanent solutions to people’s problems and helps them develop a robust relationship with Jesus Christ.

Spiritual maturity is a key ingredient of our counseling approach. Understanding who we are from God’s perspective is the key that unlocks God’s remedy. We provide a safe and loving environment, and we are committed to providing help and hope through professional and paraprofessional Christ-centered, Bible-based Counseling, and encouragement. The goal is for those who utilize this ministry to achieve true and lasting freedom from the bondage of the hurts and behaviors that prevent living the full and healthy life God has always intended.

Summary of Our Philosophy of Counseling:

We believe that God is not only willing to heal people, but that He wants to heal the whole person: body, mind, and spirit. We also believe that only God and His Word can bring this healing to people’s lives.
